What is the Perfect Dress Neckline for your Face Shape and Body Figure?

All dresses have different neckline styles and play an important part in the overall dress design. In fact, it is an integral part of the dress design that dressmakers and fashion designers consider when designing a dress.

The Importance of a Dress Neckline

The Dress Neckline can help showcase your face, bust, shoulders, and figure. It can dramatically alter the dress style and create different first impressions depending on the event or occasion. For example, some Dress Necklines can create a relaxed style, or formal style or even classy and royalty style.

Dress Necklines can even give the appearance to remove pounds of fat from your figure, enhance the comfort of the dress and my personal favorite which is to generate the air of sophistication. Yet it is also true that a poorly chosen Dress Neckline can do the opposite or negate some of the effects that a good Dress Neckline offers.

Pretty impressive isn't it?

Tips on choosing Dress Necklines

We will cover some tips on some of the different Dress Necklines and cover the pros and cons.

V-Neckline

The V-Neckline dips to a V in front of the dress at the neck, which can be a shallow or deep dip depending on your preference. The V-Neckline creates a vertical impression for the dress so it tends to create a longer, leaner or taller silhouette for the dress. For this reason, the V-Neckline style is popular for all figures.

Because the V-shaped points to the shoulders and the waist it tends to visually draw our eyes to look in and up. As a result, it tends to alter the perceived perception towards your bust and tummy.

The Do's:

  • Perfect for when you do not have much of a natural waist or heavier at the tummy
  • If you have an Apple or Hourglass shaped figure then the V-Neckline style dress will tend to slim the overall body figure.
  • Whereas a wide V-shape tends to balance out Pear-shaped figures or if you have wide broad shoulders or a short neck.
  • All style V-Neckline benefits all figures tending to create a longer, leaner or taller silhouette in which the degree of the effect depends whether you are petite, skinny or plus size. This means a V-Neckline is a great choice if you are petite or tend to be on the shorter height.
  • Additionally, a V-Neckline tends to make rounded faces appear slightly oval shaped.
  • Deep V-Neckline styles can increase the sexiness of the dress and definitely will increase the hot factor depending on the proportions between the bust size and the deepness of the V.

The Don'ts:

  • The V-Neckline can flatter most body figures but for those with a large bust, a very high V-Neckline can tend to make the bust look saggy.
  • However, an extremely deep V can result in a too-revealing style dress.

Scoop Neckline

A scoop dress is a very simple style and versatile where the U-shape can extend to different depths. In many ways, the Scoop Neckline overlaps to V-Neckline style but focuses more on the curvature.

The Dos:

  • The Scoop Neckline tends to be more suited for those with large busts as it aids the curvature effect and increases the sexiness.
  • Tends to suit best for those who are athletic or petite looking or have a pear or hourglass shape figure.
  • Wider Scoop cuts means the collarbone is exposed which helps make those with thick or short-necked a more balanced appearance.
  • Whereas those who are or doubled chin or pointing chin may benefit from a low scoop cut.

The Don'ts:

  • Similar to the V-Neckline styles applies here.

Halter Neckline

A Halter Neckline is very distinctive where it contains a collar style which is fastened around the neck. Usually, the dress itself is backless or has a low back style to enhance the effects of the Halter Neckline style.

The main effect of a Halter Neckline is that it tends to draw the eye to the centre of the body or bustline.

The Dos:

  • The Halter Neck style is perfect for taller ladies or those who have broader shoulders. This tends to make the shoulders not appear so slim and give the effect of a slightly more fuller bust.
  • If you happen to be on the shorter side then the Halter Neckline will give the perceived effect of making you appear taller by focusing the attention to your neckline and arms.
  • Generally suitable for those with slim or well-toned arms and carry their weight towards the lower body as it tends to draw the eye away from the hips and thighs towards the upper half of the body that you wish to showcase.

The Don'ts:

  • If you happen to be larger busted then take care because the Halter Neckline will create more volume, making you look more fuller and/or wider. This is more evident if you have fuller arms.
  • If you have fuller / fatter arms which are not slim then the Halter Neckline might not be suited for you given that the goal of the Halter Neckline is to shift the eye towards the upper half of the body.

Strapless Neckline

Like Halter Neckline that draws the eye towards the upper half of the body, the Strapless Neckline tends to focus more around the neck and to some degree the arms. For this reason, it is a favorite for many women and popular for Cocktail Pary or Special Occasion events.

The Dos:

  • A definite choice for ladies who have wider shoulders and a small or medium bustline as it creates a most flattering effect with emphasis placed towards the neckline.

The Don'ts:

  • Large busted or flat chested females should avoid this style of dress.
  • Even if you may suit wearing the Strapless Neckline you are advised not to choose this style if you lack the confidence or comfortable wearing a dress in this style. This is because your upper half of the body will be exposed and depending on the dress you may need to wear the dress bra-less. A dress in this style does need you to wear the dress with a degree of confidence knowing that the goal of the dress is drawing the eye to the upper half of the body in which you wish to showcase.

Sweetheart Neckline

Who can deny that a Sweetheart Neckline is a romantic style dress just like the name that it resembles? It is the top half of the heart shape. The dip in the middle of the heart can be shallow or deep cut and in many ways has the essences of the V-Neckline and Scoop Neckline styles.
This style suits most women and is an all-around favorite as it also tends to create an illusion of a larger bust.

If the dress is also strapless then the Sweetheart Neckline tends to place more emphasis around the shoulders.

The Do's:

  • Similar to the V-Neckline and Scoop Neckline styles.
  • Creates an illusion of providing a fuller or larger bust.
  • If the dress is also strapless then it is also similar to the Strapless Neckline styles as well.

The Don'ts:

  • Similar to the V-Neckline and Scoop Neckline styles.
  • If the dress is also strapless then it is also similar to the Strapless Neckline styles as well.

Off-the-Shoulder Neckline

While most of the other Neckline tends to focus on the vertical aspects of the dress or draw your eye towards the upper or middle of the body the Off-the-Shoulder Neckline goal is to extend the figure horizontally.

To some degree, it creates curvatures lower below the collarbone and shoulders where the straps just fall just below the shoulders. This style is usually accompanied by the Sweetheart neckline style and when combined achieves a seductive and flattering appearance that is suitable for almost all body shapes.

The Do's:

  • Suitable for almost all body shapes especially those with pear-shaped figure or larger plus-sized ladies or have a large bust.
  • If you have narrow shoulders then this is the ideal dress for you as well as the dress emphasis on the wider shoulders effect.

The Don'ts:

  • For flat chested ladies the dress tends to make you look flatter and you would be best avoiding this dress style.
  • If you have plump arms or large shoulders then the Off-the-Shoulder Neckline style does very little to draw your eye away to other areas of your body or figure that you wish to showcase as other Neckline styles do.
